Happiness, we all have heard and read much about it. In fact, I’l dare to say that we also have done so much in our effort of reaching it. Yet, what’s happiness after all?
I’ve been dwelling on that question for some time now and at the risk of sounding philosophical I believe that happiness is and looks different for everyone. For me, the definition of happiness has changed over the years; however, it has become simpler.
Today, happiness is those moments when I feel alive.
You know those moments, right?
Recently, as I’ve tried to be more present, I’ve become aware of what those moments are for me and I’ve come to the conclusion that happiness is the little things.
Happiness is laughing until your muscles start aching. Happiness is waking up feeling rested after sleeping the whole night, specially when you start suffering insomnia, the type that keeps you awake from 3-5 am. Happiness is giving and receiving hugs to and from someone you care, those long and meaningful hugs. Happiness is the smell of your favorite perfume as you spray it and wear it all day long. Happiness is taking a nap when your body needs one in the middle of the day. Happiness is having pancakes for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Happiness is walking side by side holding hands with your significant other. Happiness is climbing into a bed with freshly washed sheets. Happiness is driving in the freeway letting your thoughts flow. Happiness is feeling exhausted, yet strong after a great workout. Happiness is your excited pet when you come back home.
Happiness is enjoying a home cooked meal around a table with your family. Happiness is that first glorious sip of your favorite drink. Happiness is the smell of your favorite candle permeating the house. Happiness is an unexpected meaningful conversation. Happiness is those kisses that have the ability of stop time, leave your mind blank and make you feel home. Happiness is a clean house. Happiness is sleeping while the rain gently beats against your window. Happiness is finding a hairdresser who perfectly understand how you want to have your hair done. Happiness is achieving a small victory, like installing/fixing something or cooking a new dish. Happiness is listening to your favorite artists, but also finding new music. Happiness is looking through old pictures and remembering the stories behind them.
We humans have chase happiness with such insistence. Believing that we will find it once we reach a certain milestone and trying to find the extraordinary: people, moments, dreams. We have gotten so busy chasing the extraordinary that we stopped paying attention to the ordinary. The moments that if taken away, we will miss more than anything. Because..
Happiness, after all is that that’s invisible to the eyes, but fulfills the soul.
What is that for you and are you doing enough of it?
