Seriously, what is it with time that as you get older it feels like it passes faster and faster. It just seems like between my last birthday and today there was a blink of an eye. Which, of course is not true. I’m definitely not the same person as last year and that’s not only okay, but it’s good.
I made it, the 29th birthday, the last year in my 20s. I’ve seen through a lot, I’ve lived through a lot and most important learned and grow in the process. So, as a birthday present to myself, I put together a list of twenty nine things I’ve learned by my twenty-ninth birthday:
- Look on the bright side; there’s always one
- Eventually everything connects
- Life isn’t fair; accept it and move on sooner rather than later
- Strive for excellence, not perfection
- When it comes to challenges, take one day at a time
- It’s better to give than to receive; but you cannot give what you don’t have
- Give people the benefit of the doubt, always
- Believe in action, not words; specially when it comes to relationships
- Success is not the same as happiness
- Believe in second chances but be careful, not everyone deserves one
- Life is short; live in the present, worry less about tomorrow
- There are always two sides to each story, neither is completely true
- Assumptions are more often than not incorrect
- Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on
- No amount of guilt can change the past, no amount of worry can change the future
- The best moments of life don’t make it to social media
- Be selective with your battles; sometimes peace is better than being right
- Never shrink yourself to fit a place you have outgrown
- Progress is progress no matter how small
- It’s okay to be angry, it’s never okay to be cruel
- Seek respect, not attention; it lasts longer
- It takes years to build trust and seconds to break it
- Don’t make permanent decisions on a temporary emotion
- When people go low, you go higher
- Always always trust your first gut instincts
- Some day are better than others
- Time heals all wounds
- Facing your fears is the best way of overcoming them
- Happiness is in the little things
Today, more than ever I know that all these years haven’t been for nothing. That over the years I’ve become bolder, wiser and stronger. Because at the end, that’s what life is all about: evolution and growth!
